Cyber Security Month 2026: «Oversharing» – How much do we reveal about ourselves?

A photograph, a place, a name: Taken individually, the information they provide may seem harmless, but when combined, they paint a clear picture that criminals can exploit in a targeted manner. During the Cyber Security Month, the NCSC is highlighting just how much we unwittingly reveal about ourselves every day, and is inviting older adults to a workshop where they can learn alongside young people how to be more mindful about their data.

A holiday photo showing your boarding pass, lots of family photos on your social media profile, a personal document unthinkingly entered into an AI tool: Things that may seem harmless in themselves can, when taken together, be used to form a detailed personality profile: For cybercriminals, this information can provide an invaluable starting point for personalised phishing, identity theft or targeted fraud.

Intergenerational workshops

And this is the point for the NCSC in this year’s Cyber Security Month. Like last year, the campaign for Cyber Security Month has been developed in collaboration with Netpathie. In joint workshops, young people will show older adults what oversharing actually means in everyday life. What comes naturally to young people when it comes to privacy settings is often less familiar to older adults. In turn, the older generation can teach the younger generations a thing or two about life away from the internet. This is precisely where this year’s campaign comes in: it shows how different generations can learn from one another in order to be more mindful of how they handle their own information.
